Deflategate: If The NFL Really Cared About The Integrity Of The Game...
So...the news today is that Tom Brady is getting a suspension, and the Patriots are getting fined for the scandal labelled "Deflategate".
As an aside, can we please stop appending "gate" onto any and all scandals. I'm beggin' you. Just stop. Please.
But, back to the story.
The NFL released a statement, attributed to Commissioner Roger Goodell, saying:
Really?! The integrity of the game depends on the balls being uniformly inflated? Well, if that is indeed the case then here is an idea:
DON'T LET EACH TEAM MANAGE THEIR OWN BALLS! PUT THE BALLS UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE OFFICIALS.
What sport lets teams use their own balls in a game? Baseball? Nope. Soccer? Nope. Basketball? Guess again. Oh yeah - NFL Football.
The integrity of the game could be protected, once and for all, if the NFL simply said: The only ball legal for use in a game situation is one that is supplied by the referee. Full Stop.
This seems like such a simple solution - but it is not on the table. It makes you wonder if every team is doing this and the Patriots just got caught. Kinda makes you go Hmmm....
