Trump Takes A Knee On Honoring Veterans
I am stunned by Trump’s almost total shunning of any of the ceremony surrounding Veteran’s Day and the 100 year anniversary of the end of WWI. This is a softball for any politician. You go and stand with other politicians, make a few remarks as to how grateful we all are, and then you are gone. Easy as that.
And especially for Trump who has made The Military one leg of his three-legged stool of his political platform:
Immigrants are bad.
Trade deficits are bad.
Our Military is great.
How did he miss this Politics 101 opportunity? Was he trying to send some coded message that I can’t decipher? Is he suffering from some undisclosed medical problem?
For whatever reason here is his performance (or lack thereof) over the weekend:
He skips a ceremony at Aisne-Marne American cemetery
This is a cemetery containing the graves of over 2,000 American soldiers who died at the site of a 1918 battle. Trump was supposed to participate in a wreath-laying and a moment of silence at the site but was a no show due to it was raining. However Merkel and Macron and Trudeau made it without trouble.
He rides, rather than walk, during the Armistice centenary parade
When other world leaders marched down the Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe for the centenary of the Armistice ending World War I, Trump instead took his motorcade. Once again, it was raining, and Trump stayed dry in his armored limousine.
He fails to visit Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day
Again, this is a softball. He is back in the US, he has heard the criticism of his performance in France over the weekend, and Arlington is a 10 minute drive from the White House. But he was a no-show.
Any one of these alone would be worthy of criticism but taken together they are astounding.
