My least favorite McCain thing: Not learning the correct lessons of Vietnam

He was there, Damn It! He experienced the horrors first hand. He participated in the bombing of civilian targets in North Vietnam (he was shot down and crashed into a lake in the middle of Hanoi) and was subjected to a POW experience that no one should have to endure.

And yet, as a Senator and Presidential candidate, he never saw any international tension that couldn't be solved by The Military.

He famously sang Bomb Bomb Iran when asked about dealing with Iran

He was consistently one of the most hawkish Senators over his 30+ years in office. There is even a map showing a list of countries that McCain advocated for military action in.

This is very disappointing. He could have gone a different way, given his experience.

For example, he is a vigorous opponent to the use torture by the US. He is against it. Full Stop. He experienced it firsthand and finds nothing of value in it.

And yet, he is a military hawk. He saw firsthand the cruel and insane activity in Vietnam, and knows as well as anyone (given his access to information as a sitting Senator) the futile, failed, and misguided mission that it was. Nonetheless he has been the first to call for military action when any controversy arises.

I find this curious. John McCain endured a horror as a POW. And still returned to live an extraordinary life. This is a testament to the strength of the individual. If only he had become an advocate for Peace over War. That would have been, well, more commendable, in my opinion.
